Childcare

Vienna has the largest concentration of childcare facilities in Austria. Every child must complete one year of kindergarten after the fifth birthday before entering school.

For information on childcare facilities in Vienna see here: childcare facilities in Vienna.

There are three types of childcare facilities according to the age of the child: crèches for children below the age of three, kindergartens for children age three to six, after-school day-care centres for children from age six.

For children below the age of six whose primary residence is in Vienna, childcare is free of charge except for a meals fee. The City of Vienna subsidises private childcare facilities. Charges are due only for special services such as bilingual education or extended hours.

See here for further information on free kindergarten spots: free kindergarten spots (in German).

You can apply for a childcare facility spot for your child year-round. However, be advised that after the end of the main application period in January and February, there are usually only few spots left for care services starting in September of the same year.
