University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna


The mdw -  University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna was founded in 1817 and is among the world's largest and most renowned universities specialised in the performing arts of music, theatre and film. Today, its 24 departments offer 105 degree programmes and 68 university supplemental programmes that educate over 3,000 students from Austria and all over the world while employing around 1,100 individuals.

Each year, the mdw stages over 1,000 ertistic, scholarly, and teaching-related events, and the fact that most of these are accessible to the general public makes the mdw Austria's largest cultural event organiser. The overall student-instructor ratio in group- and individually taught subject areas is 4.7 students per instructor. And the university's long list of important graduates includes figures such as Gustav Mahler, Friedrich Cerha, Zubin Mehta, Claudio Abbado, Kirill Petrenko, Friedrich Gulda, Alfred Brendel, Mitsuko Uchida, Heinrich Schiff, Kurt Rydl, Elisabeth Kulman, Achim Benning, Birgit Minichmayr, Stefanie Reinsperger, Hubert Sauper, Barbara Albert, Götz Spielmann, and Wolfgang Murnberger.
